The roots of Tomas Djupsjöbacka’s musicianship lie in chamber music. He is a founding member and cellist of the string quartet Meta4, which regularly performs in key music capitals and concert halls around the world. Tomas is also the only Finnish member of the distinguished Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

In the last few years Tomas has developed a keen interest in conducting. He attended masterclasses with Jorma Panula, receives regular private coaching from New York Metropolitan Opera Music Director designate Yannick Nézet-Séguin and is currently finishing his studies at the conducting class of the Sibelius Academy.

Djupsjöbacka has appeared as a conductor with several orchestras in Finland and made his debut with the Helsinki Philharmonic in December 2014, in a subscription concert that started the orchestra’s celebration of Jean Sibelius’ 150th Anniversary. Tomas conducted a Sibelius Academy opera production of Giacchino Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims to critical acclaim in April 2015 and made his conducting debut at the Helsinki Festival in 2015, conducting AVANTI! and Colin Currie Percussion Group in Radio Rewrite by Steve Reich, in the presence of the composer.

Recent projects include a reinvitation to Tapiola Sinfonietta, Shostakovich’s 14th symphony with Wegelius Kammarstråkar and his debut with Sinfonia Lahti, which immediately led to a reinvitation. In October 2016 Djupsjöbacka will make his subscription debut with the Finnish Radio Orchestra, conducting an all-Mozart program.
